From its intended focal point, "Beyond the Eiffel" presents one of the world's most recognizable landmarks: the Eiffel Tower. Constructed from delicate metal forms against a dark background, its familiar silhouette appears surprisingly simple and complete. But as the viewer moves away from that perspective and begins to walk around the sculpture, the monument comes apart—and another Paris begins to reveal itself.
Hidden across its surfaces is a visual collection of the people, places, art, and cultural references that have shaped Joseph's admiration for Paris and France. Images evoke cinema icons such as Yves Montand, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Alain Delon, and Brigitte Bardot; artists and masterpieces associated with France, from Monet and Van Gogh to the Mona Lisa; landmarks including the Louvre and Notre-Dame; and popular traditions ranging from the Tour de France to the French national football team. Together, these fragments transform the Eiffel Tower from a monument into a personal archive of inspiration.
"Beyond the Eiffel" is ultimately Joseph's affectionate tribute to a city that has inspired him through its extraordinary concentration of art, architecture, cinema, history, sport, and everyday life. From one perspective, Paris is a monument. From another, it is everything that monument has come to represent.
