Life Is Not a Cube was conceived during a deeply uncertain moment in Joseph’s life. Hospitalized with a health concern and unsure of what awaited him, he began thinking about how easily life can appear closed, confined, and defined by our immediate circumstances.
From one precise vantage point, the sculpture becomes exactly that: a stark, hollow black cube. Move away from that perspective, however, and the illusion dissolves into a playful constellation of shapes carrying color, humor, music, optimism, and simple reminders to enjoy the moment.
The work transforms anamorphism into a philosophy: what appears confined from one point of view may be full of possibilities from another. Joseph eventually walked out of the hospital, returned to his studio, and transformed the idea born during those uncertain hours into a lasting reminder that life is far more unpredictable, colorful, and expansive than the box we sometimes imagine around it.
