"Sayat-Nova" is Joseph Nazari's vibrant tribute to the legendary Armenian ashugh, poet, and musician whose songs have echoed through generations and become an enduring part of Armenian cultural memory. From its intended focal point, the sculpture reveals a commanding portrait of the troubadour holding his instrument. Yet, as the viewer moves around the work, the portrait dissolves into an intricate world of Armenian motifs, architectural forms, musical references, ornamental patterns, and fragments of Sayat-Nova's celebrated verses. What appears as a single portrait from one perspective becomes an entire cultural landscape from another.

The work also invites a compelling parallel with filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, whose The Color of Pomegranates transformed the life and artistic world of Sayat-Nova into a mesmerizing succession of color, objects, textiles, symbols, and poetic tableaux. Much like Parajanov's cinematic language and collage art, Joseph builds his portrait through accumulation rather than simple representation. Every layer holds another fragment to discover, allowing Sayat-Nova's music, poetry, imagery, and Armenian heritage to coexist within the physical structure of the sculpture. In Joseph's interpretation, the portrait becomes more than the image of a man—it becomes a portrait of the culture his art helped keep alive.
